UPLB welcomes new freshies
27 August 2024 | Juvelle P. Villanueva |
UPLB held the Opening Convocation for this year’s new freshies on August 19, 2024 at the Copeland Gymnasium.
Dr. Janette H. Malata-Silva, vice chancellor for student affairs, warmly welcomed the students saying, “College may be overwhelming, but with a strong support system, we will thrive.”
She reminded the freshies of the guiding principles that have shaped many UP generations: honor and excellence in the service of the nation, which was also highlighted in the theme of the 2024 Freshie Welcoming Activities: “Pag-aalay ng Dangal at Husay para sa Paglilingkod sa Bayan”.
Chancellor Jose V. Camacho, Jr. also emphasized this in his message. “Huhubugin kayo ng UPLB,” he said. “You will grow, not only in academic excellence, but also in honor and character.”
He also expressed his excitement for the new Iskolar ng Bayan, whom he hoped will be able to give back to the communities and country when they graduate.
Afterward, University Registrar Carmen S. Paterno introduced the administration officials. Vice Chancellor Malata-Silva also introduced the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs (OVCSA) and its services.
This was followed by a message from the guest speaker, Dr. Esther Susan N. Perez-Mari, a physician-scientist, president of the University of Cagayan Valley, and a UPLB alumna.
She recounted her journey as a student in UPLB, which taught her resilience, humility, and most especially, love for the country. “There is nothing more fulfilling than serving your own country,” she told the new freshies.
After a series of special performances, the top 10 UPCAT passers were awarded with certificates and tokens.
Mark Ruwen De Guzman, the top awardee who is taking BS Chemistry, expressed his excitement through a special message on behalf of his batch.
To officially close the program, Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Agham C. Cuevas reminded the freshies of the UP community’s support and dedication to be their nurturing and steadfast partner in their new academic journey.
UPLB also held a parents’ orientation, campus tour, freshie fair, freshie night, and voter’s education and registration as part of the welcoming activities for the freshies.
The activities were spearheaded by OVCSA, the Office of Student Activities (OSA), All Student Council Assembly, and All Freshman Council Assembly.
