In celebration of International Students’ Day, the UPLB International Student Relations (ISR) under the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs (OVCSA) held “KATIG—Supporting International Students’ Journey” last 18 November 2023.

“KATIG,” a direct Tagalog translation meaning support, and inspired by the Filipino term for boat outriggers, aims to create a supportive space for international students to connect and have fun amidst their busy academic schedules.

The ISR team curated a lineup of entertaining Palarong Pinoy or Filipino traditional games, starting with “Patintero” at the SU Amphitheater, “Ubusan Lahi” (a Filipino version of dodgeball), Tug of War, and Sack Race Relay at the Freedom Park, and a mind game “Pinoy Henyo” at the SU Molawin Hall. Adding a surprise twist, an extra game called “Hephep Hooray!”, a combination of physical and mental activity, which the international students played and enjoyed.

International students were organized into two teams – the Yellow team, creatively named “Kiiro” (Japanese for yellow), and the Green team, aptly named “Tapioca.” Each team had two UPLB student volunteers to guide them with the mechanics of the Filipino games.

Overall, the “Kiiro” team won the first-ever “KATIG” and received the main prize. Nonetheless, all players received gold coin chocolate medals which were awarded at the end of the program to emphasize that win or lose, they all deserve a piece of happiness.

The winning “Kiiro” team expressed the spirit of fellowship by sharing their prize with the “Tapioca” team.

As the program was about to end, the new Head of the UPLB ISR, Gonzalo “Bhojo” H. Amante, Jr., gave a short closing message of gratitude to the ISR team, the participants, and volunteers for the success of the event.

“KATIG” brought together UPLB students from various backgrounds for a day filled with fun, games, and mutual support. The event’s positive turnout indicates continuous implementation for the next international students’ day.
